Project Runway Season 16 Fashion Week

The 16th installment of the original version of Projection Runway had its finale this week, as the flavor concluded with four fashion shows.

This flavour of PR was in many very dissimilar from other seasons. It started out with a twist, namely that this fourth dimension effectually; designers would non have a "muse model" anymore, merely rather piece of work with a rotating group of models, who, for the first time in the show'due south history, were of all sizes. Models were too 1 of the focuses of the bear witness. Fifty-fifty though they no longer had a stake in the contest – in other seasons, the model paired with the winning designer would also win a prize – they were often featured as they gave their feedback on the clothes. This approach is definitely worth discussing. On one mitt, it works, because it adds a dimension to the show where we also hear feedback from the "customer". On the other hand, it does not work all that well, since, more often than not, the clothes are an expression of the designer's vision and models are supposed to wear them, regardless of their thoughts. Very likely, the purpose of giving the models a voice was to draw attention to plus-size models, as the bear witness quite chop-chop turned into the Liris prove, as someone pointed out; with Jazzmine as a supporting character. This approach also reinforces the idea of commercial fashion, where a designer's disability to design for various sizes is a cause of emptying.

And, speaking of commerciality, many people online have discussed throughout the season that the show has gone a lot from an approach of high fashion to an approach of accessible, twenty-four hours-to-twenty-four hours mode. This was also seen in the JCPenney "accessories wall" and the Avon beauty studio, both brands that appeal to a large customer segment. There is nothing incorrect with that, of course, but it is of import to note the fact that the approach of the testify has inverse. Moreover, well-nigh of the challenges were 1-day challenges and unsaid a lot, thus not giving the designers plenty time to come up upwardly with really extraordinary pieces.

Which brings the states to the cast. This flavour, the group of contestants consisted of sixteen designers who competed for the win. The cast was chosen in such a mode to expect various and eclectic, only not to the point of true confrontation or pulling apart. This, of form, makes sense, since the bear witness is targeting a sure demographic and needs to reinforce their world view.

From the winning collection

The first episodes at least, were kind of lackluster in terms of what the designers created. Later on, when the competition narrowed downward, the clothes did become more appealing, but at that place were not many "wow" moments on the runway this year. However, there was a lot more enthusiasm. Two seasons agone, Tim Gunn said that the group of designers were not really invested in the show and seemed that they didn't really want to exist there. This time effectually, even more last time, the designers definitely fought harder and were more involved in the outcomes of their creations. We really appreciated many of the designers: Michael, Kenya, Amy, Batani (fifty-fifty though she flopped a lot), were some of our favorites.

This season besides brought in a couple of designers whose presence on the show shortly became quite controversial. Nosotros're talking, of course, near the twins. Shawn and Claire were two of the designers featured on the bear witness, who, despite beingness sisters, competed confronting each other. They, however, felt more like an add-on for the drama, since everything about them was over the top and dramatic. From the fact that they were e'er helping each other, which created a lot of turmoil in the work room, to Claire getting angry that Shawn was ever asking her for ideas to Shawn'southward dramatic  elimination, where she decided to go out the contest because her sister deserved more to exist there, as they were both upwardly for elimination. Of course, information technology all culminated with Claire'south elimination, as information technology was revealed that she was secretly breaking the rules of the competition.

From Margarita'due south collection

Four of the sixteen designers made it in the final episode, where they showcased their collections at New York Style Week. These were Kentaro, Ayana, Brandon and Margarita. They each had a different approach. In a mode, each 1 represented some other motility in way. Brandon's clothes were sporty and baggy, Kentaro's clothes were like shooting fish in a barrel to wear and elegant, Ayana's designs were catering to a demo who is strict virtually non showing certain parts of the body and Margarita'due south collection was for the vibrant and colorful. In the end, it was Kentaro'southward win. If you ask usa, Margarita should take taken the prize. Her drove had everything: it had a variety in terms of types of garments (not just sportswear or merely gowns), information technology was based on a 100% original print, which was used very creatively and which was enhanced by mitt one bead at a time. Her silhouettes were also dynamic and cool and gave united states of america i stunning rail moment afterwards another. Speaking of runway moments, Margarita was the only 1 who had people standing upwards during the show. If that'south not a winner, who is?

In the end, as Tim pointed out, it comes downward to gustatory modality and sensibility when you have a series of collections that were evidently all well-crafted. While this flavor of Project Rail was not as spectacular as ane might have hoped, it is however a groovy reflection of the fashion world. On a more personal note, it's always swell to hear from Nina Garcia – her evaluations are always swell.

According to recent news, the evidence has been contracted for at to the lowest degree two more seasons, so we're excited to encounter where it's going to get next. Last year, nosotros were saying that nosotros wish they would take it farther and they take. This season, they showed that things can modify and we're excited to run across how more and in what other directions Project Runway can change.
